Egan Berger & Weiner has been in the holiday spirit! The team contributed their time and efforts to a variety of community efforts this holiday season. This included volunteering at Clock Tower Thrift Shop (https://www.nvfs.org/support/thrift-shops/), a thrift store connected to the Northern Virginia Family Service community (https://www.nvfs.org/). NVFS is an organization that supports the community to achieve self-sufficiency through a variety of resources including housing, foster care and adoption, health overall well-being, and more. The team at EBW contributed their time and helped by deep cleaning the thrift store.

The team was also excited to participate in the McLean Rotary Jingle Bell 5K. (https://potomac.enmotive.com/events/register/2023-mclean-rotary-s-jingle-bell-5k-and-1-mile) This event was hosted by the Rotary Club of McLean to support local charities (https://mcleanrotary.org/).

The spine is central to the entire body and cannot be replaced, leaving it as one of the most vital and underappreciated body parts we have. Today, over 100 million people in the US struggle with chronic spine and back pain. We can change that!

In a world where many of us spend hours hunched over computers or craning down at our smartphones, maintaining spinal health is paramount. This October, the spotlight is on spinal wellness as we celebrate Spine Health Awareness Month.

Spine Health Awareness Month is an annual observance held every October to highlight the importance of spinal health and wellness. It is a period dedicated to educating the public about the significance of maintaining a healthy spine and promoting activities, practices, and habits that can contribute to spinal well-being.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has officially designated Oct. 9, 2023 PANS/PANDAS Awareness Day, a critical step forward in the fight to help young people suffering from debilitating neuroimmune disorders known as PANS and PANDAS.

Also known as autoimmune encephalitis, these post-infectious disorders are triggered by common viral and bacterial infections, such as strep throat and the flu. The immune system misdirects its response and attacks healthy brain tissue, resulting in life-altering brain inflammation and an array of debilitating symptoms. Early treatment can return patients to their baseline.

The proclamation, issued by Gov. Glenn Youngkin, says that lack of awareness can lead to “misdiagnosis or failure to diagnose many children suffering from PANS and PANDAS and increased costs to taxpayers” if the disease remains untreated.

“Young people affected by post-infectious neuroimmune disorders are taken off their life’s path,” says Dr. Gary Kaplan with the Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine. “Many lose the ability to continue schooling or work. There are days they cannot get out of bed and days filled with pain and disability.”

Is your young adult (or teen) looking for tools to manage stress? Our local therapy practice recently welcomed Brittany Tokash, Resident in Counseling, and she has openings now for new clients.

Brittany collaborates with young people, explaining how stress affects us and tailoring for them healthy techniques for confidence, energy, self-esteem, friendships, school and work. With all of her clients Tokash uses a mix of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and values work, staying focused on science-backed results and positive change.

Brittany prioritizes getting to know teens and young adults where they are, “Nobody can tell you what you’re experiencing is unimportant. If it’s causing you pain, it is significant and should be discussed with someone in a safe environment. To talk about it is the first step.”
