Ukrainian Charity fundraiser concert at South County High School on June 13, 2023.

All proceeds will go toward Ukrainian funds “Mriya Charity” and “Dai Lapu Drug”, that help kids and animals affected by war.

The concert will include performances by the Rising Stars of South County High School, as well as many other young artists in the area, AYPO Percussion Ensemble, The Northern Virginia Patriots Trumpet Ensemble, and many professional musicians and teachers of Washington DC Metro Area.

Everyone is welcome to come and support this worthy cause, and bring your friends, family, and neighbors.

Gum Springs will be celebrating 190 years of its founding by freedman West Ford on Saturday, June 17, 2023. To kick-off the celebration, there will be an unveiling of a Virginia historical highway marker for West Ford on Fordson Road (near Richmond Highway & Fordson Road) at 10:30 a.m.

Special guests include Linda Allen Hollis, Author and Descendant of West Ford; Jill Abramson, Journalist and Author of “Did George Washington Have an Enslaved Son?”; Matt Briney, Vice President, Media & Communications, George Washington’s Mount Vernon and John Mullen, Member of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources Review Board.

Immediately following the unveiling, the community celebration will transition to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Park in Gum Springs (8115 Fordson Road) for community activities to include a health fair, carnival rides, information vendor tables, music, food and an auction using “community bucks.”

For any incident, like the Las Vegas massacre to the Boston Marathon bombings, citizens play a role in saving lives in the minutes following an attack. It is imperative that we provide the knowledge and skills necessary to help our community save lives until our professional responders can arrive.

The TECC Active Bystander Certification Course, or Active Bystander for short, is the premiere training program to prepare civilians for how to respond during an intentional violence event and to address life threatening emergencies. Similar to the FEMA personal preparedness course “You Are The Help Until Help Arrives,” this dynamic and hands-on class will cover basic strategies and skills to recognize violent activities, respond safety, provide immediate rescue and initiate stabilizing medical care to the injured, and report them effectively to 911. The skills you will learn are transferable to countless situations involving traumatic injury, which include car accidents, household injuries or an active shooter.

Come and learn how to be an active bystander from our nationally recognized TECC experts and be prepared to act and save lives. Upon completion of this course, participants will receive a TECC Active Bystander certificate.
