Reston Association is throwing its support behind federal legislation that would exempt community associations from having to report information about their owners under a law designed to root out fraud and other shady dealings.

The organization sent letters to Rep. Gerry Connolly and senators Tim Kaine and Mark Warner yesterday (Tuesday) urging them to co-sponsor the Community Association Reporting Exemption Act, which would exempt some homeowners and community associations from requirements that RA calls “burdensome.”

A new sanitary district may soon form in Reston, allowing several properties to get trash and recycling services from Fairfax County instead of private haulers.

Last week, the county’s Board of Supervisors authorized a Nov. 9 public hearing for a petition to add 51 Hunter Mill District homes to its solid waste collection program.

A Reston man has been arrested after allegedly stealing lottery tickets from several convenience stores around Fairfax County.

Detectives with the Fairfax County Police Department began investigating after officers were called to the 7-Eleven (2793 Chain Bridge Road) in Oakton for a report of a larceny and assault around 3:57 a.m. on Sept. 15, according to the police scanner.

Planning is officially underway for the redevelopment of the office building at 575 Herndon Parkway.

The Town of Herndon’s Architectural Review Board will hold a work session tomorrow (Wednesday) to discuss plans to replace Dulles Overlook — a five-story office building formerly occupied by the consultant Booz Allen Hamilton — with a multi-family residential, retail and office building.

Reston Association members could see an increase in member fees next year.

The association’s staff have proposed a draft budget that includes a $865 yearly assessment — a 5.9% increase that would help cover salary increases and a $103 contribution per member to RA’s capital improvements plan.

Reston Association is lowering the water levels of its lakes, starting today (Monday).

Dam repair and inspection firm Bander Smith will perform annual spillway inspections at Newport, Thoreau and Audubon lakes, requiring them to be drained by up to 8 inches. Lake Anne will be drained by 2 feet to also allow for minor concrete repairs to its riser tower.

A combined basketball and futsal court is set to open next Thursday, Oct. 3 at Stratton Woods Park (2431 Fox Mill Road) in Reston.

Construction on the court began in August. The $229,000 project is being supported by the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA), Volkswagen Group of America and the Great Outdoors Fund, a nonprofit that aims to expand access to recreational amenities.

A plan to redevelop Van Buren Office Park in Herndon into a mostly residential development could be the first test case of a soon-to-be established zoning district in the Town of Herndon.

Rooney Properties, owner of the office park at 250 Exchange Place, wants to replace the five existing office buildings and surface parking with a 400-unit multi-family residential building and garage as well as 66 townhouse units.

New Trail Cycling & Strength, the independent fitness studio in Lake Anne Plaza, and The Reston Letter, an online and print community newsletter about Reston, will collect donations to support Food for Neighbors. The drive is hosted by New Trail.

Two men have been sentenced to prison in connection with a 2023 armed robbery of a check-cashing business in Chantilly.

Al Gibran Taylor, 42, of Reston and Antonio Chester Lewis, 39, of Oxon Hill were sentenced by a federal judge after pleading guilty to gun-related charges earlier this summer, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia said in a press release.
