Timely and thoughtful, “The Only Black Girl in the Room” follows an ambitious Black reporter who finally gets her big break after years of being consigned to copyediting and sensitivity reading. That break turns out to be a glossy profile of Jude, a prominent CEO and Genevieve’s ex-boyfriend whose marriage proposal she publicly rejected four years ago. Complications pile up, from her white colleagues’ racist criticism to her own conflicting feelings about Jude, causing Gen to realize that she may be in over her head with more than just her career on the line.
