A motorcyclist died in a crash early yesterday (Sunday) morning on Rolling Road in Newington, police say.

Officers responded at 5:18 a.m. to a crash involving a 2003 Honda 1300 motorcycle near Delong Drive, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. Police initially said the motorcyclist, Cornell Parish III, a 32-year-old Woodbridge resident, died at the scene, but an update published around 9 p.m. says he was “taken to the hospital and pronounced deceased.”

A preliminary investigation suggests a BMW sedan “may have been involved in the crash based on evidence found at the scene,” the FCPD says.

“Detectives are actively investigating the crash’s circumstances and if speed or alcohol were factors,” the police department said.

The FCPD is asking anyone with information about the crash to contact detectives by calling 703-280-0543 or submitting a tip to Crime Solvers, which can be reached by phone (1-866-411-TIPS) or online.

Parish is the 12th non-pedestrian — and third motorcyclist — to die in a traffic crash on Fairfax County roads this year, according to the FCPD. The county’s death toll has doubled from this time in 2023, when there were six such fatalities.

In March, a motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Leesburg Pike in Bailey’s Crossroads that led to a driver being charged with failing to yield on a left turn, and last month, a motorcyclist died at the scene of a crash outside the Rolling Valley shopping mall in Burke.
