A driver who allegedly hit a pedestrian near the Huntington Metro station early this morning (Friday) has been arrested, Fairfax County police say.
Officers were dispatched to North Kings Highway at Huntington Park Drive around 12:38 a.m. after 911 received “multiple” calls for what was initially described as a crash with injury, according to scanner traffic on Open MHz.
Callers reported that the vehicle had flipped and crashed into a tree, a police dispatcher said.
Upon arriving, responders with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department found a hit pedestrian in front of a car. The adult man was declared dead at the scene, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
North Kings Highway’s northbound lanes were shut down while police investigated the crash, reopening around 6:30 a.m.
Identified by police as 38-year-old Woodbridge resident Michael Rambudhan, the driver was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. He has been charged with driving while intoxicated and refusing to submit to a blood alcohol content test, the FCPD said in a news release on Saturday (May 25).
“Preliminarily, detectives from our Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) have determined that Rambudhan was driving a 2023 Acura MDX northbound on North Kings Highway,” the FCPD said. “Rambudhan’s vehicle left the roadway, struck a median, and continued onto the sidewalk where he struck Lucius Gaskins, 54, of Alexandria before striking a tree.”
According to the department, the initial investigation suggested alcohol was a factor in the crash, but detectives are still determining whether the vehicle’s speed may have played a role.
Rambudhan is now in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.
