Three Tony Award honorees are coming to the Alden Theatre (1234 Ingleside Avenue) in McLean next Saturday (June 8).
At the 7 p.m. event, three members of the original cast of the musical “Hairspray” will mark more than 20 years since the musical debuted on Broadway in the summer of 2002.
The trio portrayed Tracy, Penny and Amber, respectively, in “Hairspray,” a stage adaptation of the 1988 John Waters film about TV dancers who advocate for integration in the 1960s. The actors will recount tales from their lives and sing show tunes at the concert, which is being billed as the first reunion of the three actresses since Hairspray, per an Alden press release.
The event’s title, “Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now,” is a reference to the third song in the show, which features tunes written by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Tickets, available on the Alden’s website, are $50 for residents of the McLean Community Center’s tax district, $60 for seniors and students, and $75 for all other attendees.
VIP tickets are also available at $75 for MCC district residents, $85 for seniors and students, and $100 for everyone else. The VIP package offers a meet-and-greet and better seating.
Residents of the MCC tax district who would need financial assistance to attend can contact MCC Performing Arts Director Sarah Schallern Treff at sarah.schallerntreff@fairfaxcounty.gov.
All three performers have been nominated for the best lead actress Tony. Marissa Jaret Winokur won the award in 2003 for her portrayal of Tracy in “Hairspray,” while Kerry Butler was nominated in 2008 for her role in “Xanadu.” Laura Bell Bundy was nominated in 2007 for her role in “Legally Blonde: The Musical.”
The trio has already performed the show at other locations and has additional dates scheduled in other cities around the country. “Hairspray” won eight Tonys, including best musical, in 2003. It was later adapted back into a movie in 2007 starring John Travolta.
