The Fairfax County Park Authority will celebrate American colonists’ declaration of independence from Great Britain a little early this year, hosting its annual fireworks celebration this Saturday (June 29) at Lake Fairfax Park in Reston.

The event starts at 1400 Lake Fairfax Drive well before dark — at noon — giving attendees plenty of time to find the choicest spots for live music and the 9 p.m. fireworks show. There is no admission to the park after 8:45 p.m.

In the past, the yearly celebration has drawn crowds of 6,000 people, according to Ben Boxer, a spokesperson for the park authority. Crowds are larger when the event falls on July 4, he said.

Food trucks will be open from noon until 9 p.m. and picnic tables are available on a first come, first served basis. Live performances by the Frying Pan Farm Park Jam Band, 2ND Sole and Sonic Boom are also planned.

The Water Mine Family Swimmin’ Hole, an Old West gold rush-themed family water park, will open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Water Mine tickets are sold separately and can be purchased on the park authority’s website.

General parking for the Independence Day Celebration is $20 at the gate or $15 for those who register in advance. Admission is free for cyclists and pedestrians.

The celebration is sponsored by the Fairfax County Park Foundation, which supplements tax funding for the park system with private fundraising through private fundraisers, grants and partnerships.
