Two teens have been arrested following a shooting in Annandale on Friday (June 28) that killed a 14-year-old and left another teen injured.
Detectives believe the two boys were walking together around the Fairmont Gardens Apartments when a vehicle approached them, and its occupants began shooting, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a news release published last night (Sunday).
Officers responded to the 4100 block of Wadsworth Court at 11:18 p.m. on Friday for the reported shooting.
“When officers arrived, they found two male juvenile victims,” the FCPD said. “A 16-year-old juvenile sustained a gunshot wound to the lower body and a 14-year-old juvenile suffered a gunshot wound to the upper body.”
The boys were transported to a hospital, but the 14-year-old later died from his injuries. The 16-year-old is still in the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening, according to police.
The FCPD says the individuals in the vehicle had left the scene by the time officers arrived.
In an update on Tuesday (July 2), the FCPD announced that it has identified and arrested a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old as suspects after “a comprehensive investigation.”
The 15-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder and using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and the a 16-year-old is charged with being a principal in the second-degree, meaning they were present at the scene and aided or encouraged the crime.
Both teens are being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.
“Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the shooting and are asking anyone with information regarding this incident to call our Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 2,” the FCPD said.
The Fairmont Gardens Apartments were also the site of a shooting that hospitalized a woman in January and a fatal stabbing that led to a 14-year-old getting charged with murder in the death of a 17-year-old boy.
Both incidents occurred during a “crime suppression effort” that the FCPD’s Mason Police District organized in the neighborhood between Jan. 3 and Feb. 3. Police said the crackdown resulted in 85 people getting charged with 137 crimes and the removal of drugs and other contraband, Annandale Today reported.
