A Manassas man has died after being seriously injured in a vehicle crash in Clifton on Saturday (July 13).
The Fairfax County Police Department responded to the intersection of Henderson Road and Old Yates Ford Road around 10 a.m. for the crash involving a 2003 Honda Accord sedan and a 2019 Volkswagen Atlas SUV, according to a press release.
Based on a preliminary investigation, detectives believe the Honda driver was heading west on Old Yates Ford Road when they lost control of the sedan.
“The driver began to spin, crossed over the double yellow line and was struck on the passenger side by the Volkswagen traveling in the opposite direction,” the FCPD said.
According to police, the Honda driver was uninjured, but a passenger — identified as 22-year-old Jack Gumm — was evacuated to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Detectives learned yesterday (Sunday) that Gumm had died from those injuries.
The Volkswagen driver and a passenger were also taken to the hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.
The FCPD says alcohol doesn’t appear to have factored into the crash, but detectives are still investigating whether speed may have played a role.
Gumm is the 23rd person to die in a vehicle crash in Fairfax County this year, according to state data. This appears to be the county’s first fatal crash in July.
Per the FCPD, its Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives have now investigated 16 fatal crashes this year.
