Reston Association is marking the 50th anniversary of Reston Camps with a reunion event for former camp staff.
The reunion, which also serves as a fundraiser for the Friends of Reston’s “Send a Kid to Camp” program, will allow former counselors to reconnect, share memories, and reflect on how their experiences with Reston Camps have influenced their careers, according to a press release.
The event is scheduled for Saturday, July 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Brown’s Chapel Park (1686 Browns Chapel Road) in Reston.
“Reston Camps has been an integral part of so many children’s lives throughout the Reston area, both as campers and counselors,” RA Recreation Manager Katherine Caffey said in the release. “We hear time and time again that the camp experience helped shape career paths and taught valuable lessons used throughout school and beyond. We are thrilled to welcome all of our former staff back for this exciting reunion.”
At 50 years old, Reston Camps is the longest-operating summer camp program in the community, according to RA. Current offerings for kids and teens range from swim classes and sports to art camp, young naturalists and an “Incrediflix” camp for budding filmmakers.
“Generations of Restonians have taken part in Reston Camps since its inception fifty years ago, and Reston Association is eager to honor those participants with a reunion celebration,” RA said in the release.
The reunion is open to any former Reston Camps staff member and is free to attend. Attendees are being asked to RSVP online, and a Facebook group has been created for former staff to connect before the celebration, which will include food, games and opportunities to reminisce, per the release.
This summer, Reston Camps is hosting more than 400 campers and staff across 16 different camp programs for its 50th anniversary season. The Friends of Reston is providing scholarships to more than 25 children, ensuring they can attend camp this summer.
RA is also preparing to mark Reston’s 60th anniversary as a community with a pool party and cookout at Lake Newport Pool this Saturday (July 20).
