After a several-month-long search, the Reston Museum Board of Directors announced that Lisa Watts will be its new executive director starting this month.
Watts, previously a Recreational Program Manager at Bull Run Academy of Gymnastics, will succeed Alex Campbell, the museum’s previous executive director.
“We are delighted that Lisa has accepted our offer to lead the museum,” Carolyn Flitcroft, chair of the Reston Museum Board of Directors, said in the release. “We were impressed by Lisa’s management experience as well as her exceptional communication and customer service skills. Lisa’s boundless energy and enthusiasm will strengthen our outreach to the community, build awareness, and bring substantial value to the museum’s work.”
According to a press release, the museum’s board of directors began its search for a new executive director after Campbell’s departure last April to become an assistant archivist at the Fairfax County Courthouse.
“[Alex] was a tremendous asset to the Museum, and we were all very, very sad to see her go,” Museum board member Renette Oklewicz said. “She is young and should move up in her career, so despite our sadness at losing her, we all completely understood her decision. We wish her well in her new position and look forward to seeing her volunteering at the upcoming boat regatta.”
In a statement, Watts expressed her excitement about joining the museum and said she has “developed a deep appreciation for what makes the museum so special.”
“I look forward to exploring how the museum can bring even more benefits to children and families living in Reston,” Watts said in the release. “The museum is an important resource with a mission unique to the community. I aim to shine an even greater light on the critical value of the museum through our programming, events, and exhibits.”
Watts’ appointment comes as the museum plans its annual Lake Anne Cardboard Boat Regatta, scheduled for August 10, 2024. Oklewicz mentioned that she expects Campbell to volunteer for the regatta as well.
