Updated at 9:30 a.m. on 7/26/2024 — The man found dead in Oakton last Saturday (July 20) has been identified as Nicacio Hernandez Gonzalez, 47, of Fairfax, police say.
The Fairfax County Police Department announced today (Friday) that a third man, 20-year-old Wilmer Adli Guzman, was arrested in D.C. on Wednesday (July 24) and charged with malicious wounding by mob in connection to Gonzalez’s killing.
“The investigation into the circumstances of the Gonzalez’s death is ongoing,” the FCPD said. “Detectives urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the Fairfax County Police Department.”
Earlier: Fairfax County police have identified suspects, but not the victim in a homicide investigation that began with the discovery of a dead body in Oakton on Saturday (July 20).
Maldin Anibal Guzman, 27, and Wis Alonso Sorto-Portillo, 45, were arrested today (Tuesday) and charged with malicious wounding by mob, the Fairfax County Police Department announced.
The announcement followed an appearance on FOX5 by Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis, who told the broadcast news station earlier today that two individuals were in custody.
According to the FCPD, Guzman and Sorto-Portillo were identified by detectives “through an extensive investigation.” They’re both being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center with no bond.
Detectives are still trying to determine the identity of the man who was found dead along a wooded trail in the 9500 block of Route 29 near Fairfax Circle, the FCPD says.
Officers responded to the scene around 3:04 p.m. on Saturday after a community member reported coming across an unresponsive man while they were walking on the path. Police declared the death a homicide, reporting “obvious trauma to the body.”
The victim was described as a 20 to 30-year-old Hispanic male, and police say they don’t believe his killing to have been a random act.
“The investigation into the circumstances of the victim’s death is ongoing. Detectives urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact the Fairfax County Police Department,” the FCPD said, advising anyone with information to call its Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 2.
