A Chesterfield man has been arrested in connection with an attempted sexual assault in Bailey’s Crossroads over the weekend, police say.

Officers were dispatched to a small row of houses in the 3500 block of Carlin Springs Road around 5 a.m. on Saturday (Aug. 3) for a sexual assault, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

“An unknown suspect assaulted and attempted to sexually assault a victim outside,” the FCPD said in a blog post published today (Tuesday). “The victim was able to fight the suspect off and call the police. The suspect fled the area before police arrival.”

According to the FCPD, detectives identified John Artis, a 22-year-old man from Chesterfield, as the suspect, though no details were provided about the investigation.

Artis was arrested yesterday (Monday) in Chesterfield County, where he’s currently awaiting extradition from the county jail to Fairfax County. He has been charged with assault and attempted sexual assault, police say.

The victim of the sexual assault “sustained minor physical injuries,” the FCPD said.

As of 3 p.m. today, there have been 181 forcible sexual offenses in the county so far in 2024, according to FCPD crime data.
