Two men were hospitalized this morning (Tuesday) by a crash on Richmond Highway (Route 1) in Lorton outside Gunston Plaza.
Police and emergency responders from the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to Richmond Highway and Armistead Road around 6:50 a.m. for a two-vehicle crash that left one vehicle on fire and another with at least one person possibly trapped, according to scanner traffic on Open MHz.
The trapped person was reportedly unconscious, a police dispatcher said, describing the vehicles as a gray Jeep and a black vehicle.
“You’re en route to an accident with possible entrapment,” a dispatcher told a responding fire engine. “One person possibly trapped. One vehicle possibly overturned with flames coming from it.”
Upon arriving, responders confirmed that there was “a small fire” in one of the vehicles that “was quickly put out,” the Fairfax County Police Department told FFXnow.
After getting extricated, the trapped person and another adult man were transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital with injuries that were initially considered life-threatening.
“Both people were downgraded to non-life threatening,” the FCPD said at 9:36 a.m.
Southbound Route 1 was shut down in front of Gunston Plaza as detectives from the FCPD’s Crash Reconstruction Unit investigate the crash. The police department advised commuters to expect delays.
“Southbound Richmond Hwy is now open,” the FCPD tweeted in an update at 11:34 a.m. “Detectives continue to investigate the crash.”
