Virginia State Police are investigating the recent death of a Reston man that has been deemed “suspicious” following an autopsy.

According to police, the man was found in a silver 2005 BMW sedan that had stopped on the northbound shoulder of I-395 near Seminary Road in Alexandria around 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 8. VSP troopers responded to the vehicle after getting a call for a medical emergency.

“When troopers arrived on scene, medical personnel were actively treating one of the vehicle’s occupants and assisting a second individual at the scene,” the VSP said.

One of the occupants, Robert L. Elmore, a 66-year-old man from Reston, was transported to a hospital, where he died.

An examination and autopsy conducted by the Office of the Medical Examiner “revealed the man died from a severe injury,” state police announced today (Monday).

A VSP spokesperson said the agency isn’t releasing additional details about the medical examiner’s findings, including the kind of injury Elmore suffered, “at this stage of the ongoing criminal investigation.”

However, the VSP is seeking the public’s help with the suspicious death investigation, asking “anyone with video or knowledge of this incident” to call its Fairfax division at 703-750-8798 or email questions@vsp.virginia.gov.
