A Chantilly man is facing a murder charge in connection to yesterday’s fatal shooting at Gold’s Gym in Reston.

Steve Taehee Ha, 43, was arrested around 9 p.m. yesterday (Tuesday), nearly eight hours after he allegedly shot another man who was working out at the gym on the ground floor of the VY Reston Heights apartments.

Police were dispatched to the gym at 11830 Sunrise Valley Drive for a shooting around 1:13 p.m. Upon arriving, officers found Hyung Joon Choi inside with “gunshot wounds to the upper body,” the Fairfax County Police Department says.

Choi, a 31-year-old Reston resident, was transported to a hospital, where he died.

“Immediately following the incident, the suspect was seen fleeing the gym,” the FCPD said.

A preliminary investigation found that Choi and Ha were both working out at the gym when Ha rapproached Choi and shot him, FCPD Public Affairs Bureau Commander Capt. Kent Bailey said at a media briefing yesterday afternoon.

Police believe the shooting was “an isolated, targeted incident,” but detectives are still trying to determine the men’s relationship to each other and a potential motive, Bailey said at the time.

Ha has been charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony. He’s currently in custody without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
