A woman who runs a home daycare in Bailey’s Crossroads is facing assault charges after allegedly restraining two children with tape.

Police began investigating Sumy Shah, a 47-year-old Alexandria resident, on Aug. 1 after officers got a report of an assault in the 3600 block of Paul Street, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

“Child Abuse detectives learned that Sumy Shah…ran a county-licensed at-home daycare where, on multiple occasions, she had restrained the victims using tape,” the FCPD said in a news release published today (Friday).

Shah turned herself in for arrest on Aug. 20 after detectives obtained warrants charging her with two counts of misdemeanor assault and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Though initially held on an unsecured bond, she has since been released, the FCPD says.

“Victim specialists from our Victim Services Division have been assigned to ensure the victims receive appropriate resources and assistance,” the department said. “Detectives urge witnesses or any other victims to come forward and call our Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 3.”
