One of the drivers in a two-vehicle crash that killed three people in Burke earlier this year is facing a potential fine.

The Fairfax County Police Department announced today (Wednesday) that its Crash Reconstruction Unit detectives have charged Tei Hu, 71, of Fairfax with failing to yield on a left turn in connection to the Feb. 4 crash.

“Detectives determined [Hu] was attempting to make a left turn onto westbound Braddock Road from Bradfield Drive and was struck by a vehicle traveling eastbound on Braddock Road,” the FCPD said in a press release.

Hu was released on a summons for the infraction, which carries $97 in fines and court fees. An adjudicatory hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 6, according to the Fairfax County General District Court.

According to the FCPD’s initial report, Hu was driving a 2006 Lexus RX330I on Bradfield Drive on the morning of Feb. 4 with his wife, 72-year-old Yun Hu, in the passenger seat. He tried to turn left onto Braddock Road in front of an eastbound driver in a 2024 BMW X6, resulting in a collision.

Officers responded to the crash around 9:42 a.m. Both Lexus occupants and all five people in the BMW were taken to the hospital, three of them with life-threatening injuries.

Yun Hu died that day at the hospital. Two of the BMW’s passengers — Hong Tang, 63, of Fairfax and Yan Zhou, 68, of Burke — died from their injuries later that week.

An online fundraiser created to support Hu’s daughter by covering medical, funeral and any potential legal costs raised over $21,000.

“Thankfully her dad is home from the hospital and slowly recovering,” the GoFundMe organizer said in a Feb. 13 update. “[She] is so appreciative of everyone’s support during this incredibly difficult time. I know she is overwhelmed by the amount of people who have donated to help her family.”
