A combined basketball and futsal court is set to open next Thursday, Oct. 3 at Stratton Woods Park (2431 Fox Mill Road) in Reston.
Construction on the court began in August. The $229,000 project is being supported by the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA), Volkswagen Group of America and the Great Outdoors Fund, a nonprofit that aims to expand access to recreational amenities.
“Reston is the home of our new North American Headquarters,” said Anna Schneider, senior vice president of industry and government relations at Volkswagen Group of America. “We’re excited to be here and wanted to do something for the community that people would love, encourage them to get outside, while helping grow the game of soccer, and this project checks all of those boxes.”
The project replaces the existing basketball court. The park authority previously planned to add a futsal/basketball court at South Lakes Drive Park but shifted in favor of the current location to provide a more central community point.
The Great Outdoors Fund launched in 2017 to help fund outdoor recreational facilities by connecting public and private partners. Past projects have included a free sailing program in Baltimore, a campground expansion in Colorado and trail improvements in Georgia, among others, but the Stratton Woods court is the nonprofit’s first work in Fairfax County.
The U.S. Men’s Futsal National Team will celebrate the opening of the new court next week. Community members are encouraged to attend.
“This court is for the community, and we can’t wait to see everyone enjoying it — whether they’re kicking around a futsal ball or sinking three-pointers,” Great Outdoors Fund CEO and founder Lori McCullough said.
The FCPA is also considering building combined basketball and futsal courts at Hybla Valley Park, replacing that park’s tennis courts.
