
They rallied and came close with a second-round surge, but the nine-year run as Liberty District golf champions came to an end this season for the Langley Saxons.
Langley also had won 14 of the last 15 of the district’s high-school crowns.
Langley finished second on Sept. 24 to the Washington-Liberty Generals in the two-day, 36-hole event at Herndon Centennial Golf Course. Washington-Liberty’s team score was 304-294–598. Langley shot 307-300–607.
“Washington-Liberty played great, but our team was motivated and made up seven shots today in the second round,” Langley coach Duane Beane said. “We had a good chance to win and we played well.”
Langley was led by individual runner-up Sophie Cao, a sophomore student who shot 71-69–141. The winner was W-L’s Finn Watson with 71-68–139. Cao made three birdies the second round, as she played in the group with Finn.
“I was keeping his scorecard, so I knew he was having a great round and hard to catch,” Cao said. “I depended on and used my driver more in the second round today.”
Also for Langley over the two rounds, Andrew Wang shot 74-77–151 to finish sixth individually, Sarah Wang was 10th at 78-77–155 and Skakthi Pattabiraman shot 83-77–160. Jacob Stansbury, Alexa Green, Harrison Smith and Brennan Webb each played 18 holes for the Saxons. Smith shot 78 in the second round and Webb 82. Stansbury shot 83 the first round and Green 87.
The McLean Highlanders shot 313-310–623 to tie the Yorktown Patriots for third, then won a one-hole playoff to earn a berth into the 36-hole 6D North Region tournament. The district’s top three finishers earned region berths.
Leading McLean High School’s team was Kevin Ren, shooting 74-75–149 to finish fourth individually. Also for McLean, J.T. Deevy shot 77-77–154 and placed eighth, Kyle Li 80-76–156, Alexander Mallus 82-82–164, Lauren Wood 87-82–169 and Olivia Wood 86-85–171.
The individual leader for the Marshall Statesmen was Owen McCarton with at 77-82–159. He qualified individually for the region tournament.
