Middle-school cross-country teams race throughout Fairfax County

Middle-school cross-country meets were the name of the game across Fairfax County Saturday morning (Oct. 19).

Hundreds of girls and boys runners in grades seven and eight participated in 3,000-meter races in different areas of the county.

This is the second year for middle-school cross-country program in the county school system.

In Annandale at Poe Middle School, the Twain boys won with 47 points, with Sandburg second (58). The Irving girls won with 21 and Twain was second (44). Twain’s Marcel Worthem won the boys race in 9:38.3, with Bryce Roberts from Holmes second (10:21). Lauren Nichols of Irving won the girls race (10:40.89) with teammate Audrey Yiengst second (11:22.7).

In Chantilly at Franklin Middle School, Frost won the boys meet with 50 points and Longfellow was second (66), and the Frost girls also were first (26) with Cooper second (58). Franklin’s Onur Vural won the boys meet (10:51.8) with Grant Dougherty second (11:04.1). Cooper’s Abigail Pickhard was first in the girls race (11:49.4) with Frost’s Jacklyn Gillanders second (12:08.8).

In Clifton at Liberty Middle School, Robinson won the boys meet with 57 points with Thoreau second (82), and the Robinson girls also won (29 points) with South County second (61). Luther Jackson’s Patrick Verasin won the boys meet (10:27.5) and Carson’s Landon Wiesner was second (11:06.4). Robinson’s Claire Andresen was first in the girls (11:47.8) and teammate Cecilia Larkin was second (11:59.5).

Countywide middle-school championship meets are scheduled for Saturday morning (Oct. 26) at Liberty Middle School.
