Two Virginia State Police troopers saved a woman from potentially drowning last night (Sunday) after she crashed into a pond off of I-66.

Police and Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department units were dispatched to an eastbound I-66 ramp near Route 123 (Chain Bridge Road) in Oakton around 9:40 p.m. yesterday for a vehicle sinking into a retention pond, per scanner traffic.

“Car’s completely submerged,” a trooper said. “One female’s trapped.”

The troopers, identified as A. King and B. Foret, jumped into the pond and managed to pull a 4o-year-old woman out of the vehicle through its sunroof, according to the Virginia State Police.

The rescued woman was transported to a local hospital for evaluation. The two troopers were examined by emergency medical services for issues related to the cold temperatures, the VSP said.

A VSP spokesperson confirmed that the woman was the driver and the vehicle’s only occupant.

“The crash remains under investigation,” state police said.
