Major ice cream chain to open store in Fairfax City shopping center

One year since a nearby Cold Stone Creamery location shuttered, the chain is again returning to the Fairfax area.

A new location of the international ice cream brand is coming to 9548 Main Street, replacing the former Flippin’ Pizza restaurant in Fairfax City’s Turnpike Shopping Center.

Exterior signage had been installed above the store’s front door, as of Tuesday (Oct. 22), but a look inside showed the bulk of the interior construction work awaits before the store can start serving scoops.

According to city permits, it will cost the ice cream shop an estimated $70,000 to complete the necessary renovations, including tweaks to plumbing and the installation of equipment.

Beyond that, not much is publicly known about the project. Emails sent to both Cold Stone Creamery’s corporate office and the shopping center’s landlord, Combined Properties, went unanswered by publication time.

As of yesterday (Wednesday), no targeted opening date has been made publicly available.

The location will be Cold Stone’s sixth in Fairfax County, joining stores in Burke, Fair Oaks, Herndon, Merrifield and Springfield.

Earlier this summer, the chain opened a new location in Arlington’s Lyon Village Shopping Center.
