Herndon resident wins fencing silver medal at USA American Cup

Herndon resident Matthew Li, 16, recently won a silver medal at the USA Fencing North American Cup Division I competition.

Division I represents the highest level of fencing competition in the U.S. Li competed against many older participants.

Li’s performance earned him the distinction of being one of the first foil fencers from Region 6, which includes 12 states and D.C., to achieve such a prestigious medal at his young age.

Li’s path to the medal podium came after a grueling 13-hour, 20-bout competition.

Li is a high-school student at the Academy of Science in Loudoun County.
