The Langley Saxons and Potomac School Panthers had recent mixed results against opponents that were top teams in girls state basketball tournaments last season.
Langley (2-1) defeated the visiting Woodgrove Wolverines (0-1) of Purcellville, 59-54, as Anya Rahman scored 31 points with two steals.
Peyton Daley scored eight with seven rebounds; Alice Allen added 11 points with five boards and two blocks; Vicky Zawisza scored five; Mariah Armah had four points, five rebounds and two assists; and Maddie Shamloo had five rebounds and as many assists.
Woodgrove was the Virginia High School League’s Class 4 state champion last season, compiling a 29-1 record.
Potomac School (2-4) lost to the Osbourn Park Yellowjackets (3-0) of Manassas 67-61. Osbourn Park lost in the semifinals of last season’s VHSL’s Class 6 state tournament, while Panthers fell in the championship game of the Division I private-school state tourney to finish 21-9.
Both Potomac School and Osbourn Park are considered top contenders in their respective leagues this winter.
In the loss to Osbourn Park, Potomac School sophomore guard Sabrina Anderson scored 24 points, making six three-pointers. She also had three steals.
Zora Burrell had 19 points, seven rebounds and four steals for Potomac School; Catherine Letendre scored 10 with six rebounds; and Ava Sewell had six points and six boards.
Potomac School has played a difficult schedule so far this season, losing to undefeated Virginia Academy and St. John’s.
Through six games, Anderson averages 17.3 points per game, Letendre 12 and Burrell 8.8.
