A teenager is facing manslaughter and reckless driving charges in connection to a fatal crash that occurred outside Oakton Shopping Center last month.

According to police, the 17-year-old was driving a Toyota Camry north on Hunter Mill Road “at a high rate of speed” when he hit a 2001 Acura sedan turning left into the shopping center at Lynnhaven Place around 11:20 a.m. on Nov. 9.

The Acura driver and a passenger were both taken to the hospital, where the passenger, identified as 77-year-old Vienna resident Brenda Cratty, died, the Fairfax County Police Department previously reported. The driver’s injuries weren’t considered life-threatening.

The 17-year-old driver and a passenger in the Camry survived the crash without injuries, police said.

After turning himself in yesterday (Thursday), the teen was charged with reckless driving and involuntary manslaughter. Police didn’t specify how fast the driver was allegedly traveling, but Hunter Mill Road has a posted speed limit of 35 mph.

“He was held at the Fairfax County Juvenile Detention Center,” the FCPD said.

The Hunter Mill Road and Lynnhaven Place intersection has been the site of two fatal crashes this year. On Sept. 21, Choon Kook, an 80-year-old woman from Vienna, died after she was struck in the crosswalk by a truck driver who was turning into the shopping center.

The truck driver was cited last month for failing to yield to a pedestrian. He had an adjudicatory hearing in Fairfax County General District Court on Dec. 5 that got continued to Jan. 2, per court records.
