With an out-of-town holiday tournament next on the schedule, the Flint Hill Huskies warmed up by winning a key local boys basketball game.
In that Dec. 19 high-school contest, visiting Flint Hill (4-3, 2-0) defeated its top neighborhood and Mid-Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Potomac School Panthers, 81-64.
The Huskies took control early with a 10-3 lead and were ahead 41-31 at halftime, then 68-46 after three periods.
“We played well, got contributions from a lot of players and we were able to do things that disrupted their system,” Flint Hill coach Rico Reed said.
Senior point guard Everett Jones had 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Flint Hill. Junior guard Ty Harris had 13 points and five assists, senior guard Jack Loyd scored 15 and senior guard/forward Kobe Davis scored 13. Reed said senior Caleb West, the starting quarterback for the football team, played strong defense.
All five of those players are top returners from last season. Another key contributor who is returning is senior forward Kendall Jones. Sophomore forwards Dylan Fletcher and Blake Fitzgerald also are big contributors.
“We have a lot of experience with the seniors and Ty Harris,” Reed said. “Jack Loyd can shoot the lights out and Kendall Jones can do so many things.”
Flint Hill has played a difficult schedule, with its three losses against teams that have a combined 31-7 record. The Huskies edged visiting MAC rival St. James, 71-68, in its previous game.
Reed told FFXnow his squad should be a contender in the MAC this season.
Flint Hill will participate in the Battle in the Bull Holiday Invitational in Creedmoor, N.C., Dec. 26-28. Coolidge and Theodore Roosevelt high-school teams from D.C. also are in that tournament.
