With Christmas nearly upon us, FFXnow is signing off for the holiday.

Barring breaking news, we will be taking a break from publishing this afternoon and on Christmas Day. Regular publishing will resume on Thursday, Dec. 26.

FFXnow isn’t alone in taking a breather.

Most Fairfax County government offices are closed today and tomorrow, though recreation centers opened this morning through noon.

In addition, after the frenzy of holiday shopping, local malls like Tysons Corner Center, Fair Oaks Mall, Tysons Galleria and Springfield Town Center will all be closed on Christmas. Movie theaters, however, will be open with some new releases like Robert Eggers’s “Nosferatu” remake and the Nicole Kidman-starring “Babygirl” arriving.

Anyone looking to travel can expect reduced service from both Metro and Fairfax Connector tomorrow, with both public transit agencies following Sunday schedules. The Virginia Department of Transportation is lifting all lane closures at noon today until noon on Thursday.

Hanukkah events coming up

For Jewish community members, the area will offer a few options for commemorating Hanukkah, which will begin tomorrow and continue through Jan. 2.

In Fairfax City, the parks and recreation department and Chabad Lubavitch of Northern Virginia are partnering for a Main Street Menorah Lighting at Old Town Square (10415 North Street). Scheduled for tomorrow at 5:30 p.m., the free festivities will include entertainment, crafts and games, swag, a hot cocoa bar, hot latkes and donuts, and a chance to win two Washington Capitals tickets.

The Town of Vienna’s Christmas tree is now accompanied in the Town Green by a menorah that was installed on Dec. 9 by the Chabad Tysons Jewish Center as the only community submission in this year’s holiday decoration lottery, an initiative started last year. The menorah will be lit up during a celebration on Sunday, Dec. 29, 2024, at 5 p.m. outside the Freeman Store.

Chabad Tysons will also mark Hanukkah next Monday, Dec. 30 with a celebration at The Boro (8350 Broad Street) in Tysons. No registration is required for the 5-5:30 p.m. event, which will feature a menorah lighting, “holiday treats and festive music,” according to The Boro’s event page.

Regardless of which holiday you observe, or if tomorrow’s just another Wednesday for you, FFXnow hopes you have a chance to relax and enjoy some time with loved ones. Feel free to share any holiday plans in the comments, and we’ll be back in two days.
