A motorcyclist was killed in a crash Friday evening (Dec. 27) on Piney Branch Road near Costco in the Legato area.

The road is currently closed at West Ox Road after police and emergency medical services were dispatched to the intersection at 6:36 p.m. for a crash involving a motorcyclist and the driver of a 2021 GMC SUV, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

“Motorcyclist on the ground, severe injuries,” an officer said on the police scanner. “There’s a lot of blood coming out.”

The motorcyclist, later identified as 26-year-old Michael Yung of Lorton, was declared dead at the scene, the Fairfax County Police Department said at 7:10 p.m. A passenger in the SUV was transported to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

“Crash Reconstruction Detectives are responding to the scene,” the FCPD said at 7:10 p.m. “Please use an alternate route.”

Based on an initial investigation, police say the GMC driver was heading south on West Ox Road and tried to turn left onto eastbound Piney Branch Road when they collided with Yung, who was traveling north on West Ox Road.

“Detectives do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and continue to investigate if speed was a factor,” the FCPD said in a news release published on Saturday, Dec. 28.

Based on preliminary data, this is the 11th fatal crash involving a motorcycle in Fairfax County this year, making 2024 the deadliest year for motorcyclists since the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles launched its crash database in 2010.
