South Lakes boys basketball team off to strong start, stands 10-1

With a 10-1 overall record and seven-game winning streak, the South Lakes Seahawks are off to a strong start in the squad’s effort to defend three postseason tournament titles the boys basketball team won last season.

South Lakes won Concorde District, 6D North Region and Virginia High School League Class 6 state championships in 2024.

Leading the Seahawks this season is standout senior forward Jordan Scott, the only returning starter from last season’s team. Other returners are Toshiki Elston and Chris Kemmerer. Others who start or get significant playing time are Jacob Burnett, Makhai Ramos and Merrick Rillstone.

South Lakes defeated the visiting Yorktown Patriots, 65-54, in its most recent game. Yorktown entered the contest with just one loss and a seven-game winning streak.

The Seahawks fell behind 2-0, then quickly took the lead for good at 3-2 on a three-pointer from the right wing by Kemmerer. South Lakes extended that lead to 11-2, was ahead 18-9 after the first quarter and 36-21 at halftime.

The Seahawks’ lone loss this season was to the host Hayfield Hawks, 66-52, on Dec. 10. Aaron Mcfarlane scored 19 for Hayfield and Parker Cage 13. Jaylen Lemon had nine points and six rebounds. Hayfield was ahead 32-21 at halftime and made 10 three-pointers.

South Lakes responded to that loss by routing its close rival Herndon Hornets, 70-35, in its subsequent game — and hasn’t lost since.

Other big wins for the Seahawks have been over Patriot, 76-62, Mount St. Joseph, 78-62, and victories in a holiday tournament by 82-60 and 65-49 scores.

The Seahawks open their district schedule Jan. 10 at home against the Chantilly Chargers (6-4), which recently finished fifth with a 2-1 record at the George Long Holiday tournament at Wakefield High School.
