Fairfax County police are investigating whether a driver might have been speeding when he fatally crashed on Franconia-Springfield Parkway last Friday (Jan. 3).
Officers responded to the parkway near Bonniemill Lane in Springfield at 8:06 p.m. for a single-vehicle crash involving a 2016 Ford van, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.
A 911 caller reported that the driver had been ejected after crashing a white van, according to scanner traffic. Upon arriving, emergency responders found the vehicle on its side and began delivering CPR to the driver, who has been identified by the FCPD as Keun Hoon Lee, 89, of Alexandria.
Lee ultimately died at the scene, police said. Franconia-Springfield Parkway’s eastbound lanes were closed for several hours while police investigated the crash.
Based on a preliminary investigation, detectives believe Lee was traveling east on Franconia-Springfield Parkway “when his vehicle left the roadway, flipped over, and came to rest on an embankment,” the FCPD said in a press release on Saturday (Jan. 4).
“The speed remains under investigation, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor,” the FCPD said. “Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.”
Lee is the first person to be killed in a vehicle crash in Fairfax County this year. The county had 52 crash fatalities in 2024, according to preliminary data from the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles.
Officers are on scene of a fatal single vehicle crash at Franconia Springfield Pkwy and Bonniemill Lane in Springfield. The driver, an adult man, was declared deceased on scene.
