A number of graduates of Fairfax County high schools are members of the nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University women’s basketball team that is scheduled to play a game in Northern Virginia this week.
The 14-1 Captains from Newport News will travel to Arlington and compete against the host Marymount University Saints in a Division III game.
Christopher Newport’s women’s team was ranked ninth nationally in the most recent Division III poll by D3hoops.com. New York University is ranked tops in the nation in that poll.
Two of Christopher Newport’s Fairfax players are Oakton High School graduates Hannah Kaloi and Caitlin Crump. Kaloi is a senior forward who averages 6.3 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. Crump is a sophomore center/forward averaging 3.4 points and thus far in the season has 21 assists.
Current Oakton girls head coach Fred Priester coached both players when they were members of his team. He plans to take the Oakton girls team to the Jan. 8 contest.
“They both are a big part of the [Christopher Newport] team, so it will be fun to see them play in person,” Priester said.
Other Fairfax County players and contributors for Christopher Newport are South County High graduate and fifth-year senior guard Gabbi San Diego (4.1 points per game, 26 overall assists), South Lakes grad and sophomore forward Jessica Dornak (2.1 points), Westfield graduate and freshman forward Emma O’Connor (6.1 points), Lake Braddock grad and freshman forward Sarah Pritz (4.4 points), and Meridian graduate and freshman forward Elizabeth Creed (8.3 points and 23 steals).
Marymount (3-9) has no graduates of Fairfax schools on its roster, but does suit up four from the Prince William County area and one from Loudoun County.
