In their busy early-season schedule, the Potomac School Panthers have played basketball opponents from all over at various locales through 14 games.
The Panthers (8-6) won three girls high-school games in Kissimmee, Fla,. to come out on top in the recent KSA Events Holiday Tournament. The McLean private-school team also has played two times in Maryland, once in D.C. and, in Virginia, has competed in Ashburn, Richmond and Virginia Beach.
The travels haven’t been a hurdle — six of the squad’s eight wins have been on the road.
In the Florida tournament, Potomac School finished 3-0 to win its eight-team bracket. The Panthers defeated Brecksville-Broadview of Ohio, 55-46, in the championship game.
Potomac School won 54-38 over United South of Texas in the first round, then downed Medfield Senior from Massachusetts, 67-55, in the semifinals.
Top scorers in the three games for Potomac School were tournament Most Valuable Player Sabrina Anderson, Catherine Letendre, Zora Burrell, Sabrina Eldredge, Julia Jackson and Ava Sewall.
Potomac School fell behind 10-0 in the championship game, then rallied to lead by a point by halftime. The Panthers pulled away in the third period.
Burrell had 19 points, 11 rebounds and two steals in the final. Anderson scored 13 with five steals and two rebounds, and Letendre scored seven with nine rebounds and two assists.
Anderson scored 20 and 16 points in the other two games, with five steals in one contest. The sophomore guard made five three-pointers in the tournament.
Following that tournament, Potomac School resumed its area schedule by defeating Independent School League AA Division rival Holy Child of Potomac, Md., on the road, 73-31, behind 21 points from Anderson.
The victory was the Panthers’ fourth in a row.
