Langley improves to 3-0 in district basketball with recent victory

The Langley Saxons (9-3) improved to 3-0 in the Liberty District with a difficult road victory over the Yorktown Patriots in a Jan. 10 girls basketball game.

Langley led throughout the high-school game, but couldn’t pull away from Yorktown. The Saxons led 7-2 after the first quarter and 18-14 at halftime.

Yorktown cut the led to 35-33 late in the fourth quarter, but the Patriots didn’t score again. Alice Allen made a driving shot to up the lead to 37-33, then added a foul shot to give the Saxons a 38-33 advantage.

Anya Rahman stole the ball, then made two foul shots with nine seconds to play to ice the victory for Langley.

The game was Langley’s first since Dec. 31, when the Saxons lost in non-district action to St. John’s.

The Saxons’ other district wins were over the Herndon Hornets, 58-21, and Wakefield Warriors, 69-40.

Rahman scored 21 points against Herndon, Mariah Armah 12 and Allen 9. Maddie Shamloo had six points, five rebounds and five assists.

Rahman had 17 points, Allen 16 and Ali Glantzis 10 against Wakefield.

Langley has other district games this week against the Marshall Statesmen and Washington-Liberty Generals.

Langley, Washington-Liberty and the McLean Highlanders are expected to be the top contenders in the district this season.
