Potomac School senior scores 1,000th point in girls basketball

A standout high-school lacrosse player, Catherine Letendre also has proved her athletic talents on the basketball court.

The Potomac School Panthers senior scored her 1,000th career point in a recent game for the girls private high-school team. She is the fourth player in program history to reach that milestone.

Letendre needed 15 points to amass 1,000 entering the Panthers’ Jan. 13 home game against Georgetown Day. She scored 24 to go with 11 rebounds, four assists and four steals in the team’s 77-33 blowout win.

Letendre, who can play multiple positions, achieved 1,000 early by scoring 16 points in the first quarter. A 17-foot jumper from the left wing with 2:56 to play in the period gave Letendre 1,001 points.

“My goal since my freshman year in high-school basketball was to score 1,000,” Letendre told FFXnow. “My teammates have all helped me so much to do this.”

Letendre’s parents and two older sisters were on hand to watch the achievement.

“That was neat. My sisters usually aren’t around to see me play,” Letendre said.

Letendre has received offers to play Division I women’s college basketball. Instead, she will play women’s college lacrosse at Duke University on a scholarship.

“Catherine could definitely play Division I basketball,” Potomac School coach Krystal Ferguson said. “She is a very good player, is our three-year captain, is a very positive person and is great with her teammates.”

Letendre scored 233 points as a freshman, 230 as sophomore, had 385 last season, when she was chosen to the Division I all-state team, and has 161 through the Jan. 13 game this winter. She missed multiple games with an injury as a sophomore.

The win over Georgetown Day improved Potomac School’s overall record to 9-6. Ferguson said the Panthers’ six losses were against teams ranked in some poll.

“We have been playing well,” Ferguson said.

Also in that victory, sophomore guard Sabrina Anderson made seven three-pointers and scored 27 points to go with five rebounds.

Anderson could reach 1,000 career points as well later this season. She scored 545 as a freshman and now has 825 total through 15 games this season.

Potomac School’s Ava Sewall had nine points, six assists and four steals in the victory; Sabrina Eldredge scored seven with two steals; and Julia Jackson scored three with two assists.

Another standout Potomac School player has been senior Zora Burrell. She had a point, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals in the win.

Burrell, also a standout volleyball and softball player for Potomac School, will play Division III college basketball at the University of Chicago.

Before she finishes her career at Potomac School, Burrell has a chance to become the team’s career leader in rebounds and assists. She has 567 rebounds, with the record 731, and has 222 assists, with the record 269.

Burrell has scored 702 career points and is a career leader in steals.

Her brother plays college baseball at Williams College in Massachusetts.

Another top Potomac School player is senior Margit Crittenberger. She has yet to play this season, but could soon, following recovery from an ankle injury suffered during Potomac School’s fall soccer season.

Crittenberger will play lacrosse at Division I Davidson College.
