Tysons Japanese grocery store set for grand opening this weekend

Marufuji Japanese Market is ready to welcome Tysons shoppers.

As promised, the highly anticipated grocery store will celebrate its grand opening at 8520-A Leesburg Pike this Saturday, Jan. 25, with festivities beginning at 10 a.m.

The first 1,000 guests to arrive both that day and on Sunday (Jan. 26) will get a free Marufuji-branded tote bag, and there will be “giant sales” on various grocery items throughout the weekend, according to Fuji Mart Corp Vice President Joshua Nakama.

Some tastings and demonstrations are planned, including one involving sushi, tea from the 435-year-old manufacturer Yamamotoyama, and okonomiyaki (a savory pancake typically mixed with meat, seafood and cabbage) from sauce maker Otafuku.

Nakama says the business is flying in sashimi-grade fish directly from Japan for the occasion, and Wagyu beef will be available. The store also has a cafe that will serve coffee, matcha lattes and Japanese comfort foods.

Located next to the Tile Shop, the 18,444-square-foot store is the first D.C.-area location for Fuji Mart, which is based in Connecticut and has mostly concentrated on specialty stores in New England.

In addition to grocery staples used in Japanese cuisine, Marufuji will have housewares and home goods, a made-to-order section, and the cafe, Nakama previously told FFXnow.

After its first day of business, Marufuji will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
