A Fairfax County Public Schools substitute teacher has been arrested and dismissed from her job for allegedly assaulting a student at Dogwood Elementary School (12300 Glade Drive).

The county’s Child Protective Services received a referral on Sept. 25, 2024 indicating that a substitute teacher had assaulted a student at the Reston school, the Fairfax County Police Department said in a press release on Saturday (Feb. 1).

“The student sustained minor injuries. Detectives were notified and assumed the investigation,” the FCPD said. “Detectives determined that Rakshanda Jaiban, 44, of Sterling, assaulted a student during school hours.”

According to police, FCPS relieved Jaiban of her teaching duties upon learning about the assault allegation. She had been working for FCPS as a substitute teacher since 2019.

Jaiban turned herself in at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center on Friday, Jan. 31 and was served a summons charging her with simple assault, which is classified by Virginia law as a Class 1 misdemeanor punishable by up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.

“Victim specialists from our Victim Services Division have been assigned to ensure that the victim receives appropriate resources and assistance,” the FCPD said.

With detectives looking to talk to anyone with information about this case or any other potentially related incidents, the police department advises community members to call its Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 4.

Allegations of teachers assaulting students have cropped up in FCPS before.

Last year, a special education teacher at White Oak Elementary School in Burke was charged with multiple assaults. The school’s principal and assistant principal were both ultimately removed from their positions as well, with the assistant principal getting charged with allegedly failing to report the alleged incidents to CPS and police.
