Multiple FCPS female wrestlers earn berths into state tournament

Wrestlers from 20 different high schools in Fairfax County recently earned berths at the Zone 4 qualifying event to participate in the Virginia High School League girls state tournament.

The top five wrestlers in each weight class earned those berths at Hayfield Secondary School, with the fifth-place finishers designated as alternates. The state tournament is Wednesday-Thursday, Feb. 26-27, at the Henrico Sports and Events Center in Glen Allen.

The public-school state tournament is a competition including wrestlers from Class 1 through 6.

The Oakton Cougars and Westfield Bullodgs each had the most wrestlers qualify with five each. The West Springfield Spartans had the next most with four, and the Falls Church Jaguars, Woodson Cavaliers and Marshall Statesmen had three each.

From Oakton, among qualifiers were weight-class winners Allison Hegg (114 pounds) and Hana Coutts (145). Second was Katherine Crockett (126), fourth was Katherine Donohue (165) and fifth was Eleanor Sanderson (138).

From Westfield, Zoe Rodriguez (120) and Raya Fowle (132) won, Stephanie Rodriquez (138) was third, and Alize Benitez (120) and Sophia Alcocer (126) were fifth.

Other winners were Herndon’s lone qualifier, Eja Gatewood, at 235 and Jefferson’s single qualifier, Jayelle Jones, at 126.

From West Springfield, Gabrielle Garvey (107) and Elaina Primozic (165) were third and Claire Bowman (114) and Gabriela Song (138) fourth.

Marshall’s Jennah ElBardicy (107), Ava Wise (138) and Kade McKeever (185) were second.

From Falls Church, Maliha Baig (100) and Abigail Romero (107) were fourth and Isabela Pires (107) fifth.

Woodson’s Nimmar Al-Hussieni (132) was second, Danielle Hyder (132) fourth and Serena ManCuso (165) fifth.

The two qualifiers for the Robinson Rams were Samantha Gray (third, 114) and Chanity Brooks (fourth, 120). The Edison Eagles’ two grapplers heading to state are Aya Boudad (third, 145) and Maggie Rowland (third, 185).

The others earning state berths were Lillian Nguyen-Hoffpauir of Fairfax (fifth, 145), Langley’s Sopha Song (fifth, 100), Hayfield’s Briana Lemon (third, 152), South County’s Kaitlyn McEntee (third, 235) and Lewis’ Carmen Trejo (fifth, 235).

Others were South Lakes’ Lila Jaster (second, 152), Annandale’s Darling Saravia (fourth, 126), West Potomac’s Selena Zheng (fifth, 185) and Dayana Meruvia of Justice (fourth, 152).
