FFXnow gets court authorization to publish legal notices

FFXnow can now publish legal notices for Fairfax County.

FFXnow’s publisher Local News Now LLC was notified this week that a circuit court judge had approved its petition in December. That followed the enactment of a new state law last July that made Virginia the first in the nation to allow legal notices on online-only local news sites.

Legal notices — also known as public notices — will now be published on FFXnow’s homepage, a dedicated landing page, and our email newsletter. Notices can be submitted via an online form and will typically be published within one business day.

Our Arlington and Alexandria-focused sister sites ARLnow and ALXnow have also been authorized to publish legal notices, becoming the first online-only sites in the D.C. area to get that option.

Legal notices are paid advertising placements that required by law for certain services, from local government public hearings to estate sales and Virginia ABC permit applications filed by businesses.

For notices of public hearings, proposed ordinances and other actions, the Fairfax County government has traditionally relied on the Washington Times, which charges $30 for publications. Other print news outlets that offer legal advertising services include The Washington Post and Fairfax County Times.

GazetteLeader, a local newspaper that covered Arlington and parts of Fairfax County, also published legal notices until Local News Now acquired it last September.
