Another longtime tenant of Vienna’s Cedar Park Shopping Center is on its way out.
After more than three decades at 264 Cedar Lane SE, CVS Pharmacy will close the location for good on April 1, a spokesperson confirmed. Signs announcing the closure date have now been posted in the store’s front door and windows.
When the store closes, all prescriptions will be transferred to the nearby CVS at 337 Maple Avenue East in downtown Vienna, and employees can transition to “comparable roles within the company” if they choose, according to CVS Health Corporate Communications Manager Kara Page.
Previously reported by Patch, the impending closure is among approximately 270 expected this year by CVS, which announced plans in 2021 to reduce its footprint by 300 stores per year from 2022 to 2025.
“Store closure decisions are based on several factors, including population shifts, consumer buying patterns, store and pharmacy density, pharmacy care access, and community health needs,” Page said by email. “We’re focused on ensuring we have the right kinds of stores and the right number of stores in the right locations.”
CVS will still have more than 40 pharmacies in Fairfax County, which doesn’t have any other planned closures “at this time,” Page said. Other closures in the area have included stores in Seven Corners and Fairfax City.
According to Page, CVS has been an anchor for the Cedar Park Shopping Center for more than 30 years. It was among the existing retailers retained through the strip mall’s renovation in 2020, along with Dollar Tree, McDonald’s and the Chinese restaurant Hunan Delight.
Since that makeover, Cedar Park has seen the departures of several tenants, from chains like McDonald’s to locally owned businesses, such as the Mediterranean restaurant Lezzet and Charles’ Barber Shop. Hunan Delight shuttered last September after serving diners since at least 2008, per Yelp reviews.
However, the shopping center has also welcomed several newcomers, including eateries like Sushi Koji, Toby’s Homemade Ice Cream and the halal hot chicken chain The Red Bird, which replaced McDonald’s.
According to a property site plan, the spaces vacated by Lezzet, Charles’ Barber and Hunan Delight remain available. The 10,650-square-foot suite currently filled by CVS is listed as “leased,” but the tenant likely won’t be revealed until after the pharmacy closes.
Later this year, the Cedar Park Shopping Center will host a temporary library at 262C Cedar Lane SE, as preparations get underway for Patrick Henry Library’s renovation. Opening this spring or summer, the temporary space will offer a selection of materials for browsing, pick-up and return services, public WiFi and some programming.
Fairfax County recently began soliciting bids from construction contractors for the library renovation, which could begin this summer. Accompanied by a new parking garage, the expanded facility is expected to reopen at 101 Maple Avenue East in summer 2027 as the Vienna-Carter Library.
