FCPD charges teens seen displaying gun at elementary school

Two teenagers are facing criminal charges after reportedly brandishing a gun at Mount Vernon Woods Elementary School in Woodlawn yesterday (Thursday).

Officers responded to the school at 4015 Fielding Street at 2:53 p.m. after “several” students reported seeing two men on the property, one of whom displayed a gun, the Fairfax County Police Department says.

“Both men fled prior to officers’ arrival,” the FCPD said today (Friday) in a press release.

No injuries were reported, but officers worked with Fairfax County Public Schools officials to secure the building. Students were dismissed as scheduled around 3:15 p.m.

While searching the area, officers identified two 18-year-old men as suspects based on provided descriptions, according to the FCPD. Neither of them are FCPS students, a police spokesperson told FFXnow.

One of the men, an Alexandria resident, has been charged with trespassing on school property, brandishing and possessing a firearm on school property, while the other was charged with trespassing and property destruction.

Both teens were taken to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center and held without bond. They were also both served outstanding warrants for petit larceny, the FCPD says.

The brandishing at Mount Vernon Woods was the second gun-related incident to be reported on FCPS grounds this month.

On Feb. 20, police arrested a 16-year-old student who allegedly brought a gun to Edison High School. An investigation led to the arrest of a second student, a 17-year-old, who had handled the same gun, which reportedly being shown to a group of students.

No injuries were reported in that case either.
