An Alexandria man was arrested last weekend after he allegedly attempted to sexually assault a woman in Hybla Valley.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, the woman was walking in the area in the early morning of Sunday, March 9 “when an unknown man approached her in a vehicle.”

“The suspect offered the victim a ride but refused to let her leave once she was in the vehicle,” the FCPD said in a news release today (Thursday). “He then attempted to sexually assault her. The victim escaped from the vehicle, and he fled the area. The victim was not injured.”

Officers responded to the 7700 block of Richmond Highway shortly after 9 a.m. for the reported abduction. They then began searching the area and “shortly after” found a man and vehicle in the area matching provided descriptions of the suspect, police said.

The victim left a jacket in the vehicle, which was described as a “white work van,” according to scanner traffic.

The man — identified by police as 58-year-old Jose Mauricio Sosas Ramos — was arrested and charged with abduction with the intent to defile. He’s currently in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center without bond.

“Victim specialists from our Major Crimes Bureau’s Victim Services Division have been assigned to ensure the victim is receiving appropriate resources and assistance,” the FCPD said.

The department is asking any witnesses or other potential victims to contact its Major Crimes Bureau at 703-246-7800, option 3. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Solvers via its website or by phone at 1-866-411-8477.
