Another person in custody at Fairfax County’s jail has died.

A man identified as as Sam Zu Yung, 32, was found unresponsive in his cell by a sheriff’s deputy around 6:17 p.m. yesterday (Monday), the Fairfax County Police Department said today (Tuesday) in a press release.

“The deputy announced a medical emergency. Additional deputies and medical staff responded to render aid,” the Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release of its own, also issued today. “Rescue was called and continued life-saving efforts upon their arrival. The inmate was pronounced deceased at 6:41 p.m.”

According to the FCPD, Yung had been incarcerated at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center since Feb. 16.

Yung was facing firearm, statutory burglary and property destruction charges in Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court, including one charge of brandishing a gun near a school, according to the sheriff’s office and online court records.

Detectives with the FCPD’s Major Crimes Bureau are investigating the death, as required by sheriff’s office policies, but police say that “preliminarily, foul play is not suspected.”

Yung is the 15th person to die while in custody at the county jail since 2018, per sheriff’s office news releases.

Last September, John Boos, a 37-year-old man facing domestic violence charges, was found unresponsive in his cell, and a month earlier, Nicholas Giampa, 24, died while awaiting trial for allegedly shooting his then-girlfriend’s mother and stepfather at their Reston home in 2017.
