Fairfax County police have arrested and charged a man for a shooting over the weekend that was allegedly sparked by a dispute over a storage container unit.

Officers were dispatched to the 3100 block of Woodland Lane in Mount Vernon’s Woodland Park neighborhood for a reported shooting at 8:10 a.m. on Saturday (April 26).

Upon arriving, officers found an adult man with gunshot wounds to his upper body, according to the Fairfax County Police Department. The man was taken to a hospital with injuries deemed life-threatening, but so far, he has survived.

Danny Swithenbank, a 64-year-old man from the Mount Vernon area, was “quickly” arrested, the FCPD announced today (Monday) in a press release. Detectives subsequently found “several firearms” during a search of his home.

Police currently believe the shooting escalated from an argument between Swithenbank and the victim, who hasn’t been publicly identified.

“Preliminarily, detectives determined that the victim and suspect were involved in a verbal dispute over the delivery of a portable storage container unit prior to the shooting,” the FCPD said.

Swithenbank has been charged with malicious wounding and using a firearm in commission of a felony. He remains in custody at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center following an arraignment this morning in Fairfax County General District Court.

A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for July 21 at 2 p.m., per court records.
