Fairfax County police are investigating a single-vehicle crash in Clifton that killed a teenager yesterday (Thursday).

Officers responded to the 11000 block of Chapel Road at 3:24 p.m. for a report of a 2005 Toyota Highlander SUV “that left the roadway and struck a tree,” the Fairfax County Police Department said in a press release today (Friday).

The driver, who has now been identified as 18-year-old Clifton resident Alexander Aiden Richmond, died at the scene of the crash. The roadway was closed between Surbiton Drive and Horseshoe Trail until approximately 9:20 p.m. in the wake of the crash.

Based on a preliminary investigation, detectives don’t believe alcohol was a factor in the crash, but they’re still investigating the possibility of speeding, the FCPD says.

This appears to be the seventh fatal crash in Fairfax County in 2025, according to data reported by law enforcement to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles. Crash fatalities spiked in April with six deaths.
