A man released from the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center yesterday (Tuesday) got arrested just hours later for allegedly stealing a vehicle and attempting to burglarize a home in Burke, police say.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, its officers responded to the 9500 block of Millgate Place for a reported burglary at 7:02 p.m. on May 27.

“The complainant reported that an unknown man was in her home,” the FCPD said today (Wednesday) in a press release. “The victim armed herself with a weapon and the man fled the home and left in a vehicle. Officers located the vehicle nearby and took the suspect into custody.”

With an initial investigation, detectives learned that the 28-year-old man from Woodbridge stole a vehicle after getting released from the county jail that morning, police said.

The man had been previously arrested on May 9 and was in custody on charges of auto theft, eluding or disregarding the police and exceeding the speed limit, according to Fairfax County General District Court records.

He was released on his own recognizance yesterday after a bond hearing at 8:31 a.m.

The man is now facing additional charges of burglary, auto theft, destruction of property, credit card theft, and being drunk in public, the FCPD says. He’s being held at the detention center again, this time without bond.
