Summer is heating up in Tysons with a variety of free programs throughout the season.

Dance series launches at The Boro

A new “Latin Dance Experience” series will kick off at Boro Park (8350 Broad Street) this Sunday (June 8).

Led by Classé Dance Company, which is based in Tysons at 8032 Leesburg Pike, the series will feature lessons in salsa and other Latin dance styles, live performances and giveaways. The outdoor celebrations will continue on June 22, July 6 and July 20, lasting from 3-8 p.m. each day.

“These events celebrate the rhythms of Latin Culture through a salsa and bachata dance party, transforming The Boro into a lively dance floor every other Sunday,” the event description says. “Whether you’re new to Latin dance or a seasoned enthusiast, everyone is welcome.”

No prior registration is required to attend. Here’s the full schedule:

  • 3-3:40 p.m.: Free Bachata class
  • 3:30-4 p.m.: Bachata social dancing
  • 4-4:30 p.m.: Free Salsa class
  • 4:30-6 p.m.: Salsa and Bachata social dancing
  • 6-6:30 p.m.: Performances or dance battles
  • 6:30-6:45 p.m.: Giveaways and games
  • 6:45-8 p.m.: Social dance party continues!

The Boro is also offering several free fitness programs throughout the summer, including regular yoga, zumba and “Stroller Strides” classes. The latter, presented by Fit4Mom, is specifically aimed at parents with young children.

Tysons Corner Center unveils summer programming

Tysons Corner Center has also announced an extensive calendar of summer events, from Friday evening concerts to a return of the annual Paws on the Plaza festival.

Live music

The mall will have free music on its recently rebranded PenFed Plaza every Friday through August. Acoustic music will close out the work week from 4-6 p.m. on June 13 and 27, July 4, 11 and 25, and Aug. 8 and 29, according to a press release.

However, The Flying Ivories will change up the vibes with its dueling pianos on June 20, July 18 and Aug. 22 from 5-8 p.m. Rain dates are scheduled for June 26, July 24 and Aug 28 if needed.

“From Billy Joel to Aretha Franklin, from Sinatra to Metallica, from Johnny Cash to Taylor Swift, we’ve got it covered,” the press release says. “You control the set list, so no two shows are ever the same.”

Outside of the Friday evening concerts, Tysons Corner Center will also bring White Ford Bronco — a D.C.-based band that covers 1990s music — to PenFed Plaza on July 26 from 7-9 p.m. That concert will include giveaways and an appearance by sponsor Lava Technology Services’ mascot, Carl the Crawfish.

Paws on PenFed Plaza

The pet celebration, now in its fourth year, returns this Saturday (June 7) from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The festivities will include over a dozen vendors, a dog park with splash pads, giveaways and more.

“PenFed Credit Union will have an ATM (Automatic Treat Machine), puppy pool, giveaways and more,” the press release says. “Plus, get a photo taken of your dog and turn them into a meme. PenFed members get a VIP gift when they show their PenFed card or bank statement.”

Vendors will include Lucky Dog Animal Rescue, Woofbowl Dog Food Truck, Homeward Trails, Bark and Boarding, Pet Wants Falls Church, VCA Southpaws and Veterinary Emergency Group. Some of the shelters will allow same-day adoptions for approved applicants.

Retail events

A couple of the mall’s retailers are planning summer events of their own.

First, Foot Locker will highlight its summer offerings with an in-store celebration from noon to 5 p.m. on Sunday (June 8). The event will bring a live DJ, giveaways, interactive photo opportunities and a sweepstakes with a free pair of sneakers as the prize.

Then, after introducing the concept at its Staten Island location, the fashion store Primark will expand its free “Love It for Longer” clothing repair workshops to Tysons, where it’s approaching its one-year anniversary. The first workshop will be held on June 12 with sessions at 1 and 3 p.m.

“Participants will learn essential mending and upcycling skills — such as fixing hems, replacing buttons, or adding pockets — and will receive a free sewing kit, repair booklet, and reusable tote bag,” Tysons Corner Center said in a press release.

Participants must RSVP, since space is limited.

Back to School: Stuff-A-Cruiser

The Fairfax County Police Department has partnered with Tysons Corner Center and the Tysons-based preschool First Steps Academy for a back-to-school donation drive.

Donations of school supplies and clothing can be dropped off at the mall’s concierge desk between July 14 and Aug. 1. An official collection event will be held on PenFed Plaza on Aug. 1 from noon to 4 p.m.

Experience Your Korea

A “roadshow” celebrating Korean culture will take over the Plaza on Aug. 23 and 24, bringing food, fashion and “live cultural experiences,” per the mall’s press release.

“Attendees can immerse themselves in curated K-culture zones, discover Korea’s hidden travel gems and iconic festivals, and enjoy a range of interactive programs,” the event description says.

Fitness weekends and game nights

Starting on June 22 through Aug. 17, mall visitors will be able to enjoy complimentary fitness classes on “select” Saturdays and Sundays, though a full schedule hasn’t been released. The workouts will be provided by local businesses, such as Fabletics, Eat.Yoga.Drink and Rumble Boxing.

Tysons Corner Center will also have family game nights on Thursdays, starting today (June 5). Cornhole and ping pong equipment will be set out on the Plaza from 4-7 p.m. each day with a live DJ providing “an upbeat soundtrack.”

Future sessions will take place on June 19, July 3, July 17, Aug. 7 and Aug. 21. Equipment will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
