As the calendar flips to the summer months, the Fairfax County Police Department plans to take a modified approach to addressing the latest crime trends.
The department announced plans yesterday (Wednesday) for a summer crime initiative that will take “deliberate steps” to ensure safety — including increased officer presence to curb potential offenders.
The three-month initiative is kicking off in June with a focus on policing dining, entertainment and nightlife spots where increased activity is expected as the weather warms up.
First, foot patrols will increase in “entertainment districts and public high-traffic areas” in an effort to prevent crimes before they start.
Officers will also “maintain a strong presence” at restaurants, bars, vape shops and other venues where more visible police could “deter criminal activity, reduce disorderly conduct, and foster a sense of safety,” according to a press release.
In addition, officers will rely on collaboration with local business owners to “develop long-term, sustainable strategies that support safe, vibrant nightlife and county activities without compromising neighborhood peace.”
“FCPD is taking deliberate steps to ensure that everyone can safely enjoy their time out across the county, while also discouraging the types of behavior that can compromise the safety and well-being of our communities,” the department said.
The FCPD’s crime data portal shows that Saturdays and Sundays — arguably peak “party times” throughout the week — are among the busiest days for crimes committed against people, such as assault.
Those types of offenses, however, are currently down, at least in comparison to data from the same time a year ago. Crimes against property, such as burglary and larceny, are also down to date.
“Using data-informed decision-making, FCPD’s coordinated efforts to reduce crime through strategic prevention and focused enforcement in specific areas across the county aim to make Fairfax County a safer place to live, work, and play,” the department said.
A July focus area will be announced in the weeks ahead “as we continue our coordinated efforts to address seasonal crime trends,” according to FCPD.
