A man has been arrested and charged with last week’s fatal stabbing at a bus stop on Richmond Highway in Groveton, police say.
Officers with the Metro Transit Police Department officers took Robert Reed, 56, into custody at the Huntington Metro Station on Sunday, June 15, ending a multi-day search for a suspect in the June 10 stabbing, the Fairfax County Police Department announced today (Monday).
According to the FCPD, detectives believe Reed stabbed another man during an argument at the bus stop near a Wells Fargo bank. Police officers were dispatched to the intersection of Richmond Highway and North Kings Highway at 1:55 p.m. for the incident.
“Officers arrived on scene and located an adult male in the road with multiple stab wounds to the upper body,” the FCPD said. “Officers began performing life-saving measures until relieved by fire and rescue personnel.”
The man, later identified as Marvin Waters, a 32-year-old man with no fixed address, was transported to a hospital, where he died.
Though police initially said they were looking to find and identify two people involved in the stabbing, the FCPD indicated in an update on June 11 that it was only searching for one suspect, describing the stabbing as an “isolated incident.”
An investigation led detectives to believe that Reed was involved, though the FCPD didn’t share details about how he was identified.
After he was detained by Metro police, officers from the FCPD’s Mount Vernon District picked up Reed and took him to the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center, where he remains in custody without bond.
Reed has been charged with second-degree murder and two counts of drug possession with the intent to distribute. The Fairfax County General District Court is scheduled to hold a preliminary hearing in the case on Sept. 3 at 2 p.m., per online records.
“We would like to thank our partners at the Metro Transit Police Department for their coordination and assistance throughout this investigation,” the FCPD said.
